CORONAVIRUS: PREPARED, NOT PANICKED
We know you’ve been inundated with news, emails, and social media posts about the COVID-19 virus. Though much of it is repetitious, we want you to know Northgate is ready for action.
The Leadership Team has been following the spread of this virus, reports from the Center for Disease Control, and news coverage very closely to develop a 3-Phase Response Plan, with each phase ready to implement at any time based on the severity in our area.
While it’s understandable that there will be a certain amount of anxiety during a pandemic, our hope is that we have a congregation that is prepared, but not panicked.
It’s with that in mind, we are sharing our 3-phase Response Plan so that you know what to expect each step of the way.
In PHASE I , we are:
-Continuing with services, events, and programming as scheduled at this time.
-Asking individuals who aren’t feeling well to stay home.
-Ramping up our cleaning efforts in both frequency and thoroughness.
-Placing hand sanitizer units (upon availability) around the building and encouraging everyone to wash hands frequently.
-Reducing contact points by making sure that every set of doors remain propped open for guests.
-Ensuring Coffee Spot servers use gloves and maintain our already rigorous hand washing expectations.
-Asking all staff, ushers, greeters, and guests refrain from hugs or handshakes. Head nods, toothy smiles, and “air fives”, however, are strongly encouraged.
In PHASE II , we will:
- Limit or restrict events, activities, or outside user groups.
-Utilize giving stations and online tithing tools, rather than passing offering baskets.
-Ask Coffee Spot servers to serve guests individually rather than maintaining our usual self-serve stations. Or stop, reduce, or modify serving refreshments as needed.
In PHASE III , we are preparing to:
-Cut back and cancel programs, activities, or services as needed, and resume only when it’s safe to do so.
-Share messages, communications, and useful information via online platforms.
While we felt the need to communicate our response plan, we also have a few additional ideas for all of us to consider as we develop our very own personal response plans:
BE SMART
We need to take good care of ourselves. To be a healthy community, we know we need good hygiene, good sleep, good food, and plenty of water. As a church, we need to wash our hands frequently and stay home when we’re sick. It’s just the smart thing to do.
BE COURAGEOUS
We need to be above the hype and hysteria. Sin happens when we let fear take over. We’ll all need to notice when we’re getting caught up in the craziness and unplug from the newsfeed. We’ll need to refresh, refocus, and trust in the Lord instead. And to do that, we’ll need to pray.
“ Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
BE KIND
We need to see the opportunity in this. The world is watching and will notice how Christ followers respond. We’ll still be careful what we post online, continue to leave care packages, and support those who are sick. Yes, we may even give rolls of toilet paper to friends and neighbors who run out. It’s cool to be kind, right?
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” Galatians 6:9-10
This is a rapidly evolving situation and one with many different dynamics and far reaching repercussions. We encourage you, if you have any questions or concerns or you’d like more details, reach out to any member of our staff or email us. We’d love to hear from you.
