NEW TO THE BOARD
God continues to do beautiful things in and through the Northgate community. We’re grateful for the ways our church family is growing. We're seeing people deepen their faith, new families find connection, and more and more people find purpose as they begin to follow Jesus.
As our church continues to grow, we’re thankful for wise and faithful leadership to help guide us into the future. That’s why we’re excited to welcome Nick Gervais as the newest member of the Northgate Church Board.
Many in our congregation already know him through the million ways he’s served over the past several years. Honestly, if there’s a volunteer list somewhere at Northgate, there’s a pretty good chance his name is already on it. He has been a committed member of the Northgate community, investing in people, mentoring others, and participating in ministries across the life of our church.
Now, he will bring that same heart for the church (along with his wisdom, discernment, and kindness) into this role of helping steward decisions that shape our future.
And, while they seriously look like they could be stock photography models hired to depict "joyful Christian family", Nick and his wife, Riley, are the real deal -- and just about as humble as can be. We're grateful they've landed here with all of us.
To help you get to know Nick a little better, we asked him a few questions
about his family, interests, and journey at Northgate.
You have a beautiful family! Tell us a little bit about who's in this picture.
Next to me is my wife, Riley. We met in high school and have been married for almost 6 years now. She truly is my best friend and I love spending time with her. You can find us playing competitive board games over coffee or dueling it out on the pickleball court (and Riley is usually winning in both cases). I am absolutely blessed with how she makes our home a place filled with joy and life, especially through her delicious cooking and baking! Most importantly, she has been instrumental in helping me grow in my walk with Jesus and continually points me back to Christ.
We have two daughters, and hope to add more children to our family in the future. Naomi just turned two years old and is full of joy, laughter, and tantrums. Emma Belle is 3 months old and has been the most perfect little baby. We are beyond blessed and grateful to God for the family He has given us.
For those who don't know you, share some of your interests.
This shouldn't come as a surprise, but my top hobbies involve spending time with my wife and children, studying God's Word, and being involved in our church's community. Our family loves having others over to break bread and play board games together. I love being a dad and raising my children to know Christ. Outside of that, I enjoy creating things, whether that is through woodworking, painting, or remodeling spaces in our home. I also enjoy playing pickleball and disc golfing for some exercise and fun. During the warmer months, you can find me around my yard planting trees and cultivating outdoor spaces.
How did you first hear about Northgate and how long have you been here?
When Riley and I moved back to Minnesota from Colorado, we were looking for a church near Andover, where we were planning to buy our first home. We actually visited a handful of churches, but it wasn't until we went to the Ramsey DMV to get our Minnesota licenses did Northgate pop up on our radar as we drove past it. We attended the following Sunday, and the next, and the next, and we've been here ever since because we love this church congregation so much. That was a little over 3 years ago now.
Tell us a little bit about how you've been serving at Northgate?
Since attending Northgate, I have had the privilege to serve in different ways, including at Due North, Alpha, the First Impressions team, the Men's Advance planning team, the Men's Activities Group, and leading a couple church wide study groups.
How has Northgate had an impact on you?
It is evident that Northgate is a living church and the Holy Spirit moves through it in a powerful way. Northgate has helped me see how the Spirit can move in a deeper capacity, further understand how God wants to use me for the kingdom, and grow in my confidence in prayer. Being involved in Alpha, Grow, and Due North has helped me grow as a disciple of Jesus. I've been given opportunities to mentor young men and pour into the youth at Due North; older men have stepped alongside to mentor me, share my burdens, and offer biblical wisdom.
I'm encouraged by Northgate's exhortative sermons that remind me of God's love, truth, and glory. They instruct me in my daily walk as a Christian.
Northgate has also provided us with wonderful relationships that daily bless our life. We had little community, outside of family, when we moved back to Minnesota, but now our calendar is booked solid spending time with our friends at Northgate.
What are you most excited about with this board position or what God is doing in our community?
I'm excited to use the gifts that God has blessed me with to serve the church in a new way through this board position. I look forward to being a part of the wise counsel partnering with God in making important decisions for the church.
Lately I've been really encouraged and inspired to see God at work in our community, especially in the rising number of people who are hungry to grow as disciples of Jesus Christ, as well as the increase in young families seeking biblical truth and community. Ultimately, I am excited to hear from God about what He has in store for Northgate through prayer, intercession, and listening to the needs of our church body, and to help faithfully carry out His will.
Say "hi" to Nick and Riley next time you see them!
