LET THE TRAINING BEGIN!
We are so excited for all of you joining the Northgate Running Team!
We’re even more excited about our opportunity to support not only our community, but an amazing ministry: Cate’s Hope for the Disabled lead by Northgate’s own Cate Ongoro.
For those who are running, it’s time to start your official training to get ready to participate in the Fun Run 5k at Happy Days. What’s great is that you will not have to do this alone. We are going to have two options to come together to run together. Starting the week of July 8, groups will meet on Wednesday nights at 6:30pm and Saturday mornings at 7am to get to know each other and go for a training run.
Now, for those of you who have chosen not to run, but are going to help support Cate and the event, it’s also time to get going.
You see, we have two goals for our team.
The first is to raise awareness of Cate’s ministry.
The second it to raise funds to purchase 40 wheelchairs for Cate’s trip to Kenya in December. We have tried to make this second goal as easy as possible.
You can visit and share the link to the GoFundMe site Northgate Church for Cate's Hope .
We are running for those who can’t, and we look forward to what God is going to accomplish through our efforts over these next nine weeks both for Cate’s ministry, as well as in each of us as we train and run with purpose.
Speaking of training and running, our first devotion is based on 1 Corinthians 9:24-25. It says, “Do you not know that in a race all runners run, but only one gets the prize? Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”
Paul says, in a race, all runners run.
Seems pretty obvious, doesn’t it?
If you’re a runner, you run. And as Christ followers, we follow Christ. Running seems a bit easier to define than following Christ, but if that’s what we say we are, then our actions should back it up.
Paul also says that everyone who competes goes into strict training.
Craig and I have learned that if you want to be a runner, there are things that you do to help that happen. Not only do you run, but you treat your body like it runs. What you eat, how well you sleep, along with other strength and endurance exercises help you run more effectively, more productively. And as Christ followers, there are things that we do and do not do in order to be more productive and effective as we put into practice what Jesus and His disciples have taught and commanded us. The thoughts we think, the words we speak and the things we do in relation to others can help us run a better race.
And finally, Paul says that those who run and compete do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
Out of all the runners running in a race, only one gets the prize. Only one is truly the winner. And while it will be fun to see if any of us take home a prize from Happy Days, our ultimately goal isn’t even about us. It’s about Jesus. We each “win” when He wins, and He’s already won! As we follow Jesus, running our race for His purpose, we will serve, sacrifice and love His way. And that’s a win that will last for all eternity.
So, let’s think about that this week as we run. As Christ follower, let’s follow Christ. Let’s take His lead on how we think, speak and act so we can, for His purpose, serve, sacrifice and love His way.
Have a great week!
