VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT - MEET TRISH
Northgate Church is a Jesus-following, Spirit-moving, compassion-loving community where people find their purpose.
Jesus-following
We envision an outwardly-focused, biblically-grounded, multi-generational, deliberately-diverse, leader-developing, people-sending church. Not an audience, but an army!
Spirit-moving
We envision a Spirit-filled, soul-swaying, life-changing church, where people are released in praise, prayer, and healing and are equipped to become who God purposed them to be.
Compassion-loving
We envision a Christ-centered, radically-loving, excessively compassionate church who serves rather than be served, who gives rather than takes, and who blesses rather than curses.
That's our vision!
To all volunteers, thank you for to serving Christ and the Church. We'd like to feature the ways you guys are living this vision out with regular "Volunteer Spotlights" on the blog.
This week, we asked Trish Glover to share a little bit about herself and her heart for service. If you see Trish around Northgate, say "hello" and give her an air-five!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I live in Ramsey and currently work for the City of Minneapolis. 311 is my department where I serve as the Director. We are the call center for the City--if you have city business, comments, or complaints, you call 311.
I have been at Northgate for a little over three years. I came to check it out because I drove by every morning on my way to the commuter train station.
What's your family like?
I have three adult children and 5 grands, ages 9 months to 14. The grands live in Missouri with one of my sons and daughter-in-law. My other son lives in Washington State and is a Firefighter for the City of Chehalis. My daughter currently lives in Hudson, WI, but will be moving to Tampa in October. I came to Minnesota to be near my grands, and they moved 1 year later.
Share a few of your "favorite things".
My favorite way to vacation is to see my little grands, but I do have a few places on my bucket list; I want to spend a few weeks in Washington DC, exploring ALL the museums. I would love to go see the life size Noah's Ark in Kentucky. And Israel is a must!
I think The Chosen is my favorite series on TV right now. I have watched it 3 times in six months, and I usually never watch anything twice! Except Grease. Okay…and The Goonies, too!
How do you serve at Northgate?
I have served and continue to serve on the team for
The Alpha Course (this is my fav), in the nursery, First Impressions, and I'm part of the GROW Discipleship Group. Sometimes I volunteer for special events or funerals too.
Why has it been important for you to volunteer at church?
It’s a really good way to meet to people!
Serving and giving isn't always about being up front and being seen, it’s more about what happens behind the scenes. It takes a lot to run a ministry and volunteering is essential to the success of a church's mission. I have a servant’s heart and want to do what I can to help advance the Kingdom of God.
How has serving at Northgate had an impact on you?
1 Peter 4:10-11 says, "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms."
Serving is not only building my obedience, it is also getting me out of my comfort zone. When the Holy Spirit whispers, I am learning to step out in faith and answer that call.
Any favorite memory, funny story, or meaningful moment from a volunteer experience you can share?
Meaningful moment - I had been at Northgate for a couple of months and serving in the nursery at the time. I was sitting at one of the tables in between services and Pastor Steve came and sat down, introduced himself and began grilling me (lol, only teasing). We had a wonderful conversation! A few weeks later he came up to me, remembered me by name and asked follow-up questions about our previous conversation. That meant so much to me. Not only did he take the time to talk to me, but he earnestly listened. I have found a lot of Northgate folks to be this way, but this really touched my heart. Serving gives me the opportunity to do
that
for someone else who comes through our doors.
What has been the biggest surprise about volunteering at our church?
How easy it is! And how thankful and appreciative the staff is. It really is rewarding.
If you could encourage someone else to begin serving at/through the church, what would you say?
Just do it! Jump in with both feet. It is only a couple hours a week, bi-weekly or monthly. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Anything else you want to share about yourself or your volunteer experience at Northgate?
I have never felt more at home at a church. Everyone has been so welcoming and
real. I love all the programs we have and I’m so excited that more of us will be able to start seeing each other in-person again!
