GEEK'S GUIDE TO APOLOGETICS: OUR RESOURCE RECOMMENDATIONS
The last few weeks, the teaching at Northgate has centered around apologetics, in our series Why We Believe . Apologetics, contrary to how it might sound, is not about making great apologies--though that’s a skill that can come in real handy. No, apologetics is more about being able to site the reasoning and logic behind a belief.
On our deep dive into the reasoning and logic surrounding the Christian faith, we’ve determined the authenticity and veracity of the scriptures, the legitimacy of the resurrection, and the undeniable impact of the church on history and modern culture.
We’re totally geeking out on this stuff!
And if you’ve been craving more material to sink your teeth into, you’re in luck. We’ve put together a short list of resources that will continue to astonish and captivate you, as your beliefs are backed up by evidence.
Check these out:
Who Is This Man
In this witty and well-researched read, John Ortberg gives us a look at the historic figure of Jesus Christ and his continuing impact on the world. Familiar Bible stories suddenly take on greater meaning after seeing how they’ve shaped the world we are living in today. Ortberg is a fun and engaging writer so you’ll cruise through this one fast.
The Case for Christ
Investigative Journalist and atheist-turned-Christian, Lee Strobel, documents his interviews with Christian scholars who defend the accuracy of the New Testament. His own search for proof of the existence and divinity of Jesus has been turned into a movie
with the same title, and it’s really good!
ALPHA Course
A couple of times each year, we try to pull back the curtain on the Christian faith by way of the ALPHA Course. Each week of the class there’s a meal, a new teaching topic related to common questions, and open discussion in a totally safe, small-group environment. It’s a learning experience that changes lives, not only because of the engaging teaching, but because of the community that is found there. A new session of ALPHA has just started and meets on Thursday evenings. It’s not too late for you to jump in
.
Ben Fischer Ministries
Not only is this guy way
smart, he’s also friends with Pastor Jeff and Pastor Steve. His ministry is all about getting the gospel in front of skeptics so they too, can see the compelling truth of Jesus. His website is full of video content and great articles.
Mere Christianity
An oldie but a goodie. There should be a scuffed up, coffee stained copy of this book on a shelf in every Christian home. It’s simple, it’s profound, and it’s written by C.S. Lewis, who is arguably the most influential Christian author of the twentieth century. This is a great resource to digest with a friend or group so you can pour over the pages together.
Your Questions
Remember when Pastor Steve was asking everyone to text in their questions? Your texts are in! He’s sorted, compiled, and is bringing the answers to us this weekend. No spoilers here, but it’s gonna be good.
Jesus is alive.
The Bible is real.
We are surrounded by evidence!
We hope you enjoy some of these resources and that they help you feel equipped to tell others why we believe .
