Staying Sane And In The Spirit This Christmas
Christmas is coming!
It's possibly the very best time of year.
As excited as you might be, it's also not uncommon to feel a bit overwhelmed.
You want your relationship with Jesus to be next-level all December long, but company is coming and the house needs to be clean. Your iPhone calendar lists 3 holiday parties, a kids choir concert, countless project deadlines, and a reminder to refinance your student loans. Your nephew is selling wreaths, your gift-list is up to 19 people, your cat keeps attacking the tree, and you're hitting the eggnog a little too heavily.
Does this "struggle bus" scenario sound familiar?
No need to stay onboard and hit every stop on your way to the 25th.
You can still get next-level and enjoy a fun & spirit-filled holiday!
Here are a few small tips & encouragements that may help you stay sane this season:
Communicate
A little planning goes a long way. There are tons of events to go to, gifts to buy, and cards to mail. Take a few minutes to get clear with your spouse or family about budgets and calendars to save yourselves from unwanted stress.
Stick to the Positive
When squabbles, struggles or sadness come knocking, we're reminded "...whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." Philippians 4:8

Let go of FOMO
December is full! If it's starting to become too full, remember that it's okay to say "no, thank you" or "next time" to a few things that truly aren't important. You may have a little fear of missing out, but another cookie exchange, craft fair, party or project could lead to some serious burnout. Decide which activities are most meaningful and give them priority.
Be a Blessing
The very best way to get some yuletide cheer is to care for someone else. Maybe you'll want to sponsor a $30 box of food for a local family (head here and select "River Trail School") or invite someone to celebrate Christmas with your family. Better yet, bring them with you to Northgate. Many people are experiencing a loss of some kind. How can you reach out? Kindness and generosity are like tinsel--the effect tends to linger long after the holiday has passed.

Don't Compromise
Without a doubt, the matter of greatest importance right now is your relationship with God. Busyness, responsibilities and people pleasing may be competing for your attention, but taking some alone time to pray is the most refreshing and lifegiving thing you or I could do this season.
One of my favorite quotes is Martin Luther, saying "I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.”
I'm not suggesting you call in sick to work tomorrow so that you can stay in your sweatpants and pray for three hours--though that does sound tempting. What I am suggesting is that we can't compromise our commitment to Christ in order to meet the worldly demands of a season that's intended to honor Him in the first place.
Say "yes" to Jesus by giving Him some one-on-one time every single day in December to read some scripture and pray. Decide in advance when you want that time to be and stick to it. Even ten minutes would be a great place to start!
Then you'll naturally begin to start sneaking in some extra chat time with Him whenever you can. So you won't just wrap presents; you'll wrap presents with Jesus. You won't just snow blow the driveway; you'll snow blow the driveway with Jesus. You won't just bake cookies; you'll bake cookies with Jesus.
