SERVING SPOTLIGHT - MEET STEVE & LISA
Northgate is a Jesus-following, Spirit-moving, compassion-loving community where people find their purpose.
That's our vision!
To everyone working on a Northgate team, thank you so much! We LOVE sharing all the ways you guys are living this vision out with regular "Serving Spotlights" right here on the blog.
This time, we asked Lisa and Steve Keen to share a little bit about themselves and how serving is a meaningful component to their family-life and faith- journey.
Next time to you see them in the lobby say "hi" and thank them for serving our community. They are making a difference in many people's lives and helping others become who God purposed them to be!

Tell us a little bit about you!
We have lived in Otsego for the past 15 years and both of us grew up in Burnsville, MN. Steve has worked for Sleep Number for the past 24 years and Lisa works as a PCA and Math tutor (when she isn't leading her American Heritage Girls troop, Teaching at her homeschool co-op or homeschooling her kids). Steve enjoys playing games, frisbee golf, biking and skiing. Lisa enjoys the great outdoors, kayaking, hiking and biking and fellowshipping with friends.
And your family?
We have 4 kids, two boys and two girls. Jonathan is 21, Elianna 19, Abigail 17 and Ben, 15. No grandchildren or pets, but Lisa's parents both live with us.
What are "a few of your favorite things"?
Steve loves board games and his favorite is probably Agricola. Our favorite movie all time is the Princess Bride, though we both bought the Mask of Zorro for each other on our 1st anniversary (when we were dirt poor and couldn't afford anything :)). Steve enjoys Chicken Parmesan and Lisa enjoys Walleye.
How long have you been at Northgate?
We first heard about Northgate back when we were meeting at PACT charter school. Our friends from co-op invited us and we've been hooked ever since.
You guys volunteer a lot! Where do you serve at Northgate?
We are both teachers in Kidnection, Northgate's kids ministry. Steve is an intercessor for the Grow Leadership group and part of the prayer team. We both attend a small group, as well.
Why has it been important for you to serve at church?
Service is at the heart of the church. It is critical to both its mission and to our health as participants in it. We enjoy being able to share and encourage others and have ourselves been encouraged countless times through service and church fellowship.
How has serving at Northgate had an impact on you?
Serving helps us get to know people, learn to depend on God and take time to stop and listen.
Any favorite memory, funny story, or meaningful moment from a serving experience you can share?
There have been countless times of praying for others that have been incredibly meaningful for us. For Steve one of the special memories he had was of playing bible jeopardy and stump the leader with the 8th and 9th graders he was teaching during the first time we tried out Alpha to the youth.
What has been the biggest surprise about volunteering at our church?
How passionate our leaders are to ensure we meet the needs of those we serve.
If you could encourage someone else to serve, what would you say?
Just say "Yes"! Too often we make excuses (too little time, not enough experience, I wouldn't know what to do, etc.). I'm as guilty of that, as anyone, but I've found that there is blessing not only for those you serve but for those doing the serving :)
Anything else you want to share about yourself or your experience at Northgate?
We love our church community and we are blessed to be a part of it. We each also share time in the wider Christian community in Bible study and service and we would encourage that, as well. It is wonderful to hear and share this Christian life with others!
