8 Clever Ways to Use or Ditch Extra Halloween Candy
Passing out candy to cute kids in costumes is fun!
Bringing your littles around the neighborhood to trick-or-treat is a blast!
What’s not-so-fun?
-So much leftover Halloween candy that you’re swimming in it.
-Kids whining about wanting “just one more piece” and bouncing off the walls.
-Sneaking into the candy stash repeatedly each night after dinner, adding another 600 calories to your otherwise carefully thought out meal-plan.
But we’ve come up with some creative ways to move through that mountain of candy a bit quicker, keeping those kids from sugar highs and protecting your waistline from the evils of tans fats.
MOVIE NIGHT CHARCUTERIE Plan a movie viewing party with friends or family and serve up a delightful tray of sweet and salty snacks, like this one. It’s a great way to get the kids to share their collection and chill as a family. What flick will you pick?
This is also a fun one to bring to your Bible study or small group!
GINGERBREAD HOUSE TRIM Even if you buy a pre-made kit, there’s never enough candy to properly deck out your gingerbread mansion. Set some of your candy-haul aside so you can create some real estate that any gingerbread man would pay top dollar for.
GAME NIGHT Let’s face it…you’re overdue for some good old fashioned friend time. And though we can’t endorse actual gambling, a little healthy competition over a board game and a pile of sweet treats never hurt anyone! Invite a few people over that you’ve been meaning to hang out with more. Then Bust out a deck of cards or some Scattergories and place those candy bets.
IRON CHEF A family night or date night could get really exciting as you’re challenged to use your candies in a baking or cooking challenge! What genius new recipe will result from your very own reality cooking competition?
CANDY AS CURRENCY Are your kids always trying to negotiate getting out of chores, getting five more minutes of screen time, or going to bed a little later? Let them use their candy as currency to buy themselves a break! Post a list of “prices” on the fridge and watch their candy collection dwindle down to nothin’.
TREATS FOR TROOPS Send off those sweets to bless some dedicated troops! Our heroes overseas love to get goodies and notes of encouragement. Find out how you can salute our troops with a candy care package by doing a search or just hit up this one.
CHRISTMAS PINATA Okay, it’s probably not your typical Christmastime tradition, but incorporating a pinata this holiday season might be a fun twist. Gather up an armful of your trick-or-treat bounty and pop it in the freezer till December. Plan to stuff a pinata full of those sweets and small toys for a Christmas party or a crazy after-school surprise for your kiddos. This one is affordable and cute.
NICE LITTLE NOTES You can make a pretty big impact on someone special by scrolling out a nice note and pairing it with a little bag of goodies. Think of someone you love or someone who needs your encouragement. Sit down with some paper or a greeting card and start to pray for your friend. The Holy Spirit may bring to mind some words of support or a scripture. If you’re not getting anything, just write whatever little sentiments are on your heart. This is a great way to get the whole family praying and thinking kind thoughts for others. The recipient of your gift will be walking on air and your words for them will be helping them become who God purposed them to be!
