BOARD GAMES, GIVING, AND GROWTH DURING COVID
With the advent of #Coronavication--that’s “coronavirus vacation”-- families are dusting off their board games and keeping themselves busy with some good, old fashioned healthy competition. It’s fun to see pictures and video on social media of puzzles, strategy games, and parents introducing kids to childhood favorites. Games are good for the family and good for the soul!
There is, however, one board game we all love to hate…
Monopoly.
Is there any other game more infuriating?
Any other game so embedded in our culture?
Any other game that can get you flipping tables like Jesus?
Probably not.
It takes one thousand years even though there’s just one goal --> force your opponent into bankruptcy.
So why do we still love it? Why do we keep passing it on to each new generation?
Maybe it’s because of those cleverly themed special editions like Star Wars, Golden Girls, and Tiger King--- we all know that last one is coming.
Maybe it’s because we just love the feeling of a fistful of pastel-colored cash.
Or maybe, it’s because we’re drawn to the security of a safe investment.
Whatever the reason might be, we want to remind you that Northgate is still a safe investment during this season. We know of many community partners, families, and businesses being impacted by the pandemic. And we’re here for it. We’re ready. The coronavirus may be thrusting a world of change at us, but our mission remains unchanged. We will not be derailed.
Not today, Satan.
Do not pass go. Do not collect $200.
We’re more inspired than ever to help people become who God purposed them to be and we know that God is using these circumstances to do just that.
Here are 6 reasons you can feel good about investing in Northgate right now:
1. Giving supports our staff.
Our pastors and staff are still working. In fact, we’re working harder than ever before. The hours are long and the work is challenging, but they see how God is moving and they’re excited to serve during this season! They’re literally re-inventing the way we do church and making the most of every opportunity.
2. Giving gives us greater reach.
Our church was seeing good growth before and this new season of social distancing has caused a surge in our digital ministry. People are hungry for content and are open to faith in a way they weren’t just two short weeks ago. Our Facebook page is gaining new followers every day and our online messages and reaching more than we could’ve imagined! INCREDIBLE! While we are amazed to be reaching more people than ever, your generous giving ensures we have the tools, talent, and content to keep reaching people for Christ online.
3. Giving pays the bills, baby.
Sounds pretty boring, but just like each of us have bills independently, our church has bills to pay, too. And we pay them as a community, because this is our church. We may not be worshipping in person right now, but we’re maintaining our mortgage, utilities and all the rest. We will all be ready to bust back through the doors when given the green light!
4. Giving helps those depending on us.
Northgate faithfully supports many groups, ministries and missionaries, right here in the Twin Cities and around the world.
To name a few:
Alliance for Renewal Churches
Living Acts Ministry
Global Seed Planters
Healing Haiti
Operation Mobilization
Teen Challenge
Elevate Hope House
Cate’s Hope
River Trail Learning Center
In addition to these amazing partners, we’re also reaching out to individuals and families in our community who are in need, starting with single moms and seniors. We’re making sure they have groceries, internet, and someone to talk and laugh with now and in the coming weeks.
5. Giving is good stewardship.
Simply put, Christ followers prioritize well. We put God first in everything, including our finances.
6. Giving keeps us tuned in to Jesus.
A focus on generosity keeps our spirits open and our hearts free to be the hands of Jesus to others in need. Plus, generosity produces warm fuzzies and who doesn’t love that?
As concern over this virus grows, we are aware of people in our church and community who are anxious, not only about matters of health but also about financial security. We jokingly used the phrase “coronavication” but we know that a “shelter-in-place/stay at home” order is a serious matter and causes hardship for many families. If you need support or encouragement, we are here for you. Our staff members are working (remotely) every day and are happy to help. We strive to have resources available to make sure each of us stays safe, healthy, well fed, and stocked on toilet paper.
If you have not been adversely affected and are able, we encourage you to give generously so that you can provide for others. We are blessed in order to be a blessing! Let’s give with the expectation that God is at work and He invites us to be a part of what he’s doing.
